Strand

As a result of the Strand case, local governing bodies will now be required to go to referendum, and seek approval from the voters, prior to issuing any bonds that are payable from ad valorem taxation.  This will mean that each CRA will have to seek voter approval via referendum prior to being able to issue TIF-backed bonds.

PROJECT SUMMARY

In the effort to assist communities resolve urban and environmental issues through research, education and partnerships, the Center for Urban and Environmental Solutions (CUES), the Department of Urban and Regional Planning (DURP) and the Institute of Government (IOG) have undertaken a joint project dealing with redevelopment and revitalization of Southeast Florida.  Under the direction of DURP Community and Economic Development Professor Frank Schnidman, an initial inventory of the established Community Redevelopment Agencies (CRAs) in the 7-county Southeast Florida Region has been completed. This region is coterminous with the Southeast Florida designation by Enterprise Florida. With the assistance of MURP Graduate Student Patrick Brett, this database on all 50 CRAs within the region was created.   The information posted here will help all those in the region and beyond who are interested in learning more about the roles and responsibilities of CRAs. In addition this database will serve as the foundation for a much broader data collection effort that will be undertaken jointly with a number of CUES partners, and will include numerous other tools and techniques to implement redevelopment and revitalization goals, policies and objectives.

It is the intent of CUES to keep this information on CRAs current, and therefore we ask those who review this database to inform us of any new information so that we can update the database.  In you have any comments, corrections or additional information, please contact Frank Schnidman at CUES (schnidma@fau.edu).
