CUES Director visits Tallahassee as
part of South Florida's Regional Business Alliance
On
Wednesday, March 17th , Director Jim Murley participated in
the “South Florida Regional Business Day” in
Tallahassee. The day included meetings with legislative leaders,
key committee chairs, agency secretaries and commissioners
and tri-county legislative delegation members to discuss regional
issues. The group also sponsored a lunch at the Governors Club
to recognize Governor Bush, the Speaker of the House, and the
President of the Senate for their leadership in passing the
South Florida Regional Transportation Authority legislation.

Annual Regional Excellence Awards
The first annual South Florida Regional Excellence Awards program will
be held on Friday, June 11th, from 12 until 2 p.m. at the Westin Hotel
in Fort Lauderdale. The event is sponsored by the South Florida Regional
Resource Center (SFRRC), a partnership organization that includes CUES,
the Collins Center for Public Policy, and the South Florida and Treasure
Coast Regional Planning Councils. The awards will highlight South Florida's

Implementing Infill and Redevelopment
in South Florida: Community Redevelopment Agency Basics
On March 19, 2004, over 100
participants attended the latest Hot Topics for Local Governments
seminar, "Implementing Infill and Redevelopment in South
Florida: CRA Basics." This seminar was presented by the John
Scott Dailey Florida Institute of Government at FAU, CUES,
and FAU's
Department of Urban and Regional Planning. Explore the CRA

ULI works with State
Road 7 Collaborative
The Urban Land Institute (ULI) was contracted by the South Florida
Regional Planning Council to conduct a Market Study Needs Analysis
and Land Assembly strategy on behalf of Broward County 's State
Road 7 Collaborative. ULI conducted research and interviews during
the week of March 15th and presented their key findings and recommendations
on March 19th. The study was funded in part by the South Florida
Regional Resource Center. To review the ULI's recommendations

Treasure Coast Task
Force Schedules Kick-off Meeting
The Task Force proposed by Florida Senator Ken Pruitt intends
to hold its first meeting on April 8th at FAU's Port St. Lucie
campus. Governor Bush's staff is reviewing an executive order that
would create the task force, currently known as the Committee
for a Sustainable Treasure Coast. CUES Director Jim Murley was
asked by Senator Pruitt to direct the Committee that will study
and make recommendations to improve quality of life in the region.
The Committee will include participants from Indian River, Martin,
and St. Lucie counties. A preliminary website, www.sustainabletc.org,
has been developed to track the progress of this initiative.
Florida Public Officials Design Institute unveils new website

The Florida Public Officials Design Institute at Abacoa (Design
Institute) invites you to visit its redesigned website at www.floridadesigninstitute.org.
The new site tells the story of the institute, highlights its
graduates, and offers copies of final reports from its first
three sessions in PDF format. The Design Institute is part of
CUES' Abacoa Project and is directed out of our Treasure Coast
office.

VisionBroward Leadership Conference
On April 22nd, from 8:30 a.m. until
12:00 p.m., the VisonBroward community will hold a
Leadership Conference. The conference will address
the issues of identifying and developing civic, business,
and government leadership for the advocacy and implementation
of VisionBROWARD recommendations in order to fulfill
the community's vision for Broward County's future
economic health and sustainability. This event will be moderated by
Donald Upton of Fairfield Index and will feature Keynote
Speaker, Doug Henton, founder and president of the
Silicon Valley-based firm, Collaborative Economics.
Mr. Henton is the also the author of Civic
Revolutionaries: Igniting the Passion for Change in
America’s Communities.
FAU is co-sponsoring this event
and CUES Director Jim Murley serves as co-chair of
