Regional Shift: South Florida in Transition has been released!
CUES has released a new regional report, Regional Shift: South Florida in Transition, highlighting significant ways in which South Florida has been transformed over the past decade. Through the generous support of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, this report updates a 2001 report, Imaging the Region: South Florida via Indicators and Public Opinions. The new report identifies key themes and trends in South Florida’s environment, people and economy. It tracks the region’s transformations in each of these areas, emphasizing the increasing need to consider issues and formulate solutions regionally if South Florida is to remain economically competitive and environmentally sustainable. Jonathan Barnett on Principles, Practices, and Implementation of Redesigning Cities
Jonathan Barnett, in his new book, Redesigning Cities, shows how urban design can direct the time and money that goes into development toward a more positive result. Building upon his strong conviction that government is responsible for its actions and their results, Mr. Barnett informed South Floridians about his ideas at a free lecture on FAU’s Jupiter campus on Thursday May 13th. Participants learned also that “There is no free market in real estate. Private investors initiate developments, but the big decisions are made by federal, state and local governments.” This lecture was part of the Florida Public Officials Design Institute at Abacoa. The Design Institute is an initiative of the Abacoa Project at CUES and a team of community professionals. This initiative is dedicated to improving Florida’s towns and cities and offers elected officials options and design tools for addressing specific problem sites in their communities. Committee for a Sustainable Treasure Coast (CSTC) holds second meeting
At the second meeting of the CSTC, members heard from veterans of the Commission for a Sustainable South Florida on their landmark work to establish a restoration plan for the Florida Everglades. Former chair Richard Pettigrew and members Maggy Herchula, Rock Salt and Robert Coker stressed the need to find consensus and practical solutions to the growth challenges facing the Treasure Coast. Creative Approaches to Workforce Housing Workshop: May 19-21
The new Broward Design Collaborative has been established to provide opportunities for Broward communities to come together with design professionals and FAU faculty and students to solve urban issues through architecture and urban planning. Its first program is a three-day workshop to develop schematic planning concepts and principles for workforce housing on a five-acre city-owned property located on the southeast corner of 7th Avenue NW and Sistrunk Blvd in downtown Fort Lauderdale. These principles will combine “Smart Growth” higher densities with new thinking related to sustainability, environmental revitalization and social strengthening of the community. Artist and thinker Michael Singer will lead a team of architects, engineers and planners in the workshops.

The design team will work for three days. At the end of each day, at 5:30 p.m., the team will present its progress and ask for feedback from the community. All are welcome.

Following the workshop, FAU’s architecture and planning students will convert the concepts and principles into site plans, building designs and planning and zoning recommendations during the fall. For more information, see www.glennweiss.com/bdc.

PLEASE NOTE:
The public input sought on the Boating Facility Siting Plan portion of the Broward Manatee Protection Plan has been postponed pending results of preliminary report.
