Governor Bush Creates Florida Hurricane Relief Fund
Following the devastation caused by Hurricane Charley and Hurricane Frances, thousands of Floridians are in need. Governor Jeb Bush has established the Florida Hurricane Relief Fund to assist communities in rebuilding. This fund will be used for needs unmet by other disaster relief organizations also working to help rebuild lives and communities. Communities will decide how their allocations from this fund should be spent, and the most heavily impacted communities will receive the greatest percentage of these funds. CUES and FAU’s Institute of Government hold third Transportation Today Seminar

On Wednesday, September 22, the third Transportation Today seminar was held on FAU’s Commercial Boulevard Campus. The Transportation Exchange program, under the direction of administrator, David S. Plummer, PE, brings timely transportation topics to the South Florida region. The latest event covered Street Calming in Orlando; Roundabout Fundamentals; Traffic Simulation Models; Miami-Dade’s ½ Cent Transportation Sales Tax; and Transit Concurrency in Broward County. South Florida Regional Resource Center Participates in Florida Redevelopment Association Annual Conference
On Friday, September 24, members of the South Florida Regional Resource Center participated in a panel session at the Florida Redevelopment Association’s Annual Conference at the Diplomat Hotel in Hollywood, Florida. The session, moderated by CUES Senior Fellow for International Programs, Frank Schnidman included an introduction to the South Florida Regional Resource Center by CUES Assistant Director for Regional Programs, MaryBeth Burton; an outline of the Eastward Ho! Brownfields Partnership by Terry Manning of the South Florida Regional Planning Council; a description of regional connections to work of the Overtown Civic Partnership and Design Center by Phil Bacon of the Collins Center for Public Policy; an overview of the proposed Transit-Oriented Development in West Palm Beach by Kim Delaney of the Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council; and a description of the Institute of Government’s services by Sarah Shannon of FAU’s Institute of Government.
 
Developing Support for South Florida’s Marine Industries
On Monday, September 27, 2004, Director Jim Murley served as moderator for the Miami River Marine Industries Symposium at Miami’s Hyatt Regency Hotel. The Symposium was designed to provide the latest information on marine business opportunities, economic viability of marine industrial sectors, trade trends, and economic incentives for growth. Director Murley is also working with Palm Beach County officials to develop strategies to pass the County’s waterfront protection bond issue this November.

Florida Atlantic Planning Society (FAPS) Second Wednesday Lecture Series
On Wednesday, September 29 from 5:30 - 6:30 PM at the FAU Downtown Campus, room HEC 1110A-B, the Wednesday Lecture Series begins with North Miami City Attorney John Dellagloria (A pre-lecture slide presentation on North Miami will begin at 5:15). Refreshments will be served and guests are welcome. Workforce housing in South Florida continues to be a serious problem that is frequently discussed but all too seldom implemented. Come hear John Dellagloria discuss this important issue and how his city is addressing it.

Real Estate Development Trends for the Treasure Coast
Florida’s Treasure Coast remains one of the hottest real estate development areas in the country. The Southeast Florida ULI has assembled governmental leaders and developers for a candid discussion about the challenges and opportunities for growth on the Treasure Coast, to be held on October 14th. Speakers include Director Jim Murley and Senator Ken Pruitt.

Economics of Everglades Restoration
As part of FAU’s Department of Civil Engineering’s Friday Seminar Series, Dr. Richard Weiskoff of the University of Miami’s Economic and International Studies Program will give a seminar on the economics of Everglades Restoration on October 15 from 12:00 – 1:30 in the Akhurst Room, College of Engineering, on FAU’s Boca Raton campus. On October 22, the Tri-County Leadership Council is presenting its second annual regionalism summit. This summit, subtitled “Understanding the Puzzle,” will feature regional leaders from Chicago and Tampa Bay and will feature keynote speaker Lynda Keever, Publisher of Florida Trend Magazine.

CUES will continue its joint seminars with the Florida Association of Realtors focused on smart growth and new urbanism. The next offering will be in Orlando on October 21.
